Chapter 15

River

We planned a dinner with our friends right after we returned from his parent’s house and told them we were expecting a boy. The guys were excited to have another hunting buddy added to the mix, and the girls were excited to start shopping and getting us set up with all things boy related.

Today, we’re on our way to meet up with Jack at his store and do a video conference to see if we can settle all of this out of court. Jack says he’s pretty sure they want to intimidate me into settling so they don’t have to go to court. Since we have the law on our side, Jack says we want to go to court. Storm and the other guys trust him, so I do as well.

We get settled on the video call and exchange some pleasantries. For the first time, I get to see Jason’s parents in something other than his high school graduation photo. They’ve aged, and they have not aged well. Part of me wants to hope that it was losing a son which did this to them, but I doubt if they cared at all. If they had, they would have been at the funeral.

“Hey, Mrs. Owens, let’s get started. From what we understand, you have no family support. Is that true?” the other lawyer asks.

“Biological family by blood, no, but she does have a family here, including Storm and his parents, who are willing to stand by her,” Jack answers for me.

Taking a deep breath, I try to steady my nerves. The last thing I want is for them to see me as weak. “That’s correct,” I say, trying to sound confident. “I may not have blood family, but I have a support system who is ready and willing to help me through this.”

The other lawyers make some notes before answering their next question.

“And is it true that you don’t have a job?”

“I currently do not,” I answer just as Jack told me to.

So far, all the questions are exactly what Jack expected them to ask me.

The other lawyer raised an eyebrow and leaned in towards the camera. “So, you expect to raise a child without a stable income?”

“I have savings and am working on finding a job as we speak,” I reply, keeping my voice steady.

“But until then, you’ll be relying on your friend’s charity,” the other lawyer says condescendingly.

“It's not charity," Storm spoke up from beside me. "We're family, and we look out for each other."

The other lawyer looks skeptical, but there is a hint of frustration in their eyes. He knows they are losing ground in their argument.

"We're willing to offer you a settlement that will cover your medical bills and give you some financial support until the baby is born," Jason's mother finally speaks.

At her sudden intervention, I can feel my blood boil. "I don't want your money," I spit out.

The lawyers mute their mic once again and talk to Jason's parents, who just nod their heads before they unmute and continue their questions.
